Customize Hermes Desktop Keyboard Shortcuts

Hermes Desktop exposes most navigation and actions through the command palette and a remappable shortcut system. A good keymap makes common work faster while remaining conflict-free, memorable, and accessible across your operating system and plugins.

Start with the command palette

Open the palette with Cmd/Ctrl+K or Cmd/Ctrl+P. It can navigate to pages and settings, jump to sessions, change model or theme, spawn a terminal, restart the gateway, update Hermes, and run contributed commands. Search by action name when you do not remember a binding.

Open Settings → Keyboard Shortcuts with Cmd/Ctrl+/ to remap supported actions. Desktop flags duplicate assignments as conflicts, including bindings contributed by desktop plugins. Keep destructive or broad operational actions harder to trigger accidentally than ordinary navigation.

Useful defaults include Cmd/Ctrl+N for a new session, Cmd/Ctrl+, for Settings, Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+F for session search, and Cmd/Ctrl+. for Command Center. Available defaults can vary by platform, so trust the current shortcut panel.

Keymap checklist

List the five actions you use most before remapping anything.
Check operating-system and application-level conflicts.
Resolve every duplicate warning in the shortcut panel.
Keep navigation bindings consistent across profiles when practical.
Avoid single-key bindings for update, restart, delete, or other consequential actions.
Test plugin-contributed commands after installing or removing a plugin.
Document custom team bindings when multiple people share instructions or recordings.

Common pitfalls

Optimizing for novelty instead of recall. A clever chord that nobody remembers is slower than the palette.
Ignoring plugin conflicts. New contributed commands can collide with an established map.
Copying macOS notation to Windows or Linux. Use the platform-specific modifier shown by Desktop.
Binding operational commands too aggressively. Accidental restarts or updates can interrupt active work.

Verification

Remap one harmless navigation action, trigger it from the keyboard, and confirm the settings panel shows no duplicate. Test the command palette as a fallback, restart Desktop if required by the current build, and verify the binding remains. Revert the test if it is not clearly better than the default.
